Filing a Roof Insurance Claim in Alabama: A Practical Guide
An Alabama roof claim goes: document the damage, check your deductible against the likely repair, notify the carrier, have an independent inspection ready before the adjuster arrives, meet the adjuster on the roof, then check the scope line by line. Contractors cannot negotiate the claim for you, and deductible waiving is fraud.
Document before you file
Get dated photographs of every damaged slope and elevation, plus interior damage, before anything is repaired or cleaned up. Note the date of the storm.
An independent roof inspection report in hand before you notify the carrier changes the conversation, because you are describing specific findings rather than asking someone to come and find out whether anything happened.
Check the deductible before you notify
If the likely repair is close to or below your deductible, filing gains you nothing and still records a claim against your loss history.
Many Alabama policies carry a separate, percentage-based wind and hail deductible that is substantially higher than the all-peril deductible. Read your declarations page for that specific figure before assuming.
Notify the carrier within the policy's window
Policies require prompt notice, and some carry shortened notice periods for wind and hail specifically. Check your own policy language rather than relying on a general rule.
Emergency mitigation such as tarping should be done immediately regardless, because most policies require you to prevent further damage and will not cover damage that continued because you waited.
Be on the roof with the adjuster
This is the highest-leverage thing you can do. An adjuster inspecting alone may check two slopes, may work from the ground or a drone, and will not know that the back elevation is the one that was hit.
Have your contractor present so findings are discussed on the roof, in person, while everyone is looking at the same shingle. Disagreements resolved there rarely need resolving later.
Read the scope line by line
Carrier estimates are itemized. Compare the line items against your contractor's scope and look for what is missing: drip edge, starter course, ridge cap, ice and water membrane, pipe boots, flashing, permit, disposal, steep or two-story charges.
Omissions are far more common than disputes over the covered amount, and they are usually resolved by supplementing with documentation rather than by argument.
Know what a contractor can and cannot do
A roofing contractor can inspect, document, write a scope, meet the adjuster and perform the work. In Alabama, negotiating or adjusting a claim on your behalf is public adjusting and requires a license.
Two things should end a conversation immediately: an offer to waive, absorb or rebate your deductible, which is insurance fraud, and a contract that assigns your claim rights before you have had it reviewed.
If the claim is underpaid or denied
A denial often reflects an incomplete inspection rather than a final judgment. You can request a re-inspection and submit your own documentation.
Most Alabama policies include an appraisal provision for valuation disputes, and the Alabama Department of Insurance accepts consumer complaints. For coverage disputes rather than valuation disputes, that is a question for an attorney, not a roofer.
Questions
Does filing a roof claim raise my premium?
It can, and it goes on your claims history either way. That is why the deductible comparison at the start matters.
Can my insurer require me to use their contractor?
No. A carrier can recommend a preferred contractor, but choosing who repairs your roof is your decision.
What is ACV versus RCV?
Actual cash value pays the depreciated value of the roof. Replacement cost value pays the full cost, usually releasing the depreciation once the work is complete and documented. Which one you have is stated on your policy.
