How to Spot Hail Damage on a Roof
Real hail damage shows as randomly distributed impact bruising with granule loss and a soft spot in the mat underneath. The fastest way to confirm hail hit a property is to check soft metals: gutter aprons, vent hoods, furnace caps and air conditioner fins record impacts that asphalt hides.
Check the soft metals first
Before anyone gets on the roof, look at the gutters, downspouts, vent hoods, the furnace cap and the fins on the outdoor air conditioning unit. These deform easily and hold a clear record of impact.
If soft metals across a property are dented, hail hit it. If they are entirely clean on every elevation, be skeptical of a claim that the shingles are hail-damaged.
Know what a real hail hit looks like
A genuine hail impact on an asphalt shingle is a roughly circular spot where granules have been knocked away, exposing darker mat, with a bruise underneath that feels soft and slightly springy under thumb pressure.
The bruise matters more than the missing granules. Granule loss alone can be wear. A fractured mat under the impact point is what shortens the shingle's remaining life and what makes the damage functional rather than cosmetic.
Look for random distribution
Hail falls randomly, so real hail damage is scattered unevenly across a slope with no pattern. This is one of the clearest ways to tell it apart from other damage.
Damage in lines, along seams, or clustered where people would walk is mechanical or foot traffic damage. Damage concentrated on one windward edge is wind. Hail has no such organization.
Understand that one slope can be hit and others not
Hail is usually driven at an angle by wind, so it strikes some elevations hard and leaves others untouched. A west-facing slope can be badly damaged while the east slope is perfect.
